The Siberian reindeer (Rangifer tarandus sibiricus) is a migratory caribou subspecies that inhabits Russia’s tundra and taiga. Indigenous Nenets, Evenki and Chukchi people rely on these animals for meat, clothing and transport, and the herds are woven into cultural rituals. Trophy hunting of Siberian reindeer is virtually nonexistent; the focus of management is sustaining wild herds for ecological and cultural reasons.
Unlike other ungulates, there is no formal safari industry for Siberian reindeer. Indigenous communities harvest animals for subsistence using traditional methods such as stalking on foot or driving animals into corrals. Illegal commercial hunting has severely reduced numbers; the Taymyr herd—once the world’s largest wild reindeer herd—declined fourfold over two decades to about 240,000 animals, largely because of poaching. Because most hunts are subsistence activities linked to herding, foreign sportsmen rarely target this species.
The IUCN lists wild reindeer as Vulnerable due to climate change, overhunting, industrial development and ineffective land‑use planning. Russian scientists warn that continued illegal harvest could push the Taymyr herd below the threshold (~88,000 animals) needed for viability. Conservation organisations advocate stricter monitoring, seasonal closures and bans on commercial hunting, noting that reindeer are central to the livelihoods of Arctic peoples. In Mongolia, migratory reindeer populations are small and protected within the Ulaan Taiga Strictly Protected Area; hunting is prohibited.
In summer the herds migrate hundreds of kilometres to coastal tundra for calving and feeding on lichens and mosses. Climate‑change‑induced rain-on-snow events create ice layers that prevent access to forage, exacerbating the impact of poaching. Indigenous herders practice sustainable harvests and have cultural taboos against killing pregnant females or calving cows. Because trophy hunts are unavailable, visitors interested in reindeer typically join cultural tours or observe migrations rather than hunt.
