The Cape buffalo, often dubbed the “Black Death,” is renowned for its unpredictable nature and imposing horns. Mature bulls can weigh more than a metric tonne and travel in herds that defend one another fiercely. Their heavy bosses and muscular build make them one of Africa’s most sought‑after dangerous‑game trophies. Old solitary bulls—called “Dugga Boys”—are especially prized because of their size and cantankerous attitudes.
Cape buffalo hunts usually start by driving or walking to locate fresh tracks or a herd before continuing the stalk on foot. In southern Africa hunters often follow buffalo through thick bushveld, riverine thickets or open plains and must be prepared for long hikes and intense heat. Once a suitable bull is identified the approach is slow and careful because wounded buffalo can charge unexpectedly. The peak hunting period is at the end of the dry season (September–November) when grass is short and animals congregate near water.
Cape buffalo populations are generally healthy; Africa holds an estimated 500 000 animals and some herds are expanding despite habitat pressures. In South Africa, hunting revenues support anti‑poaching and habitat restoration projects on private reserves. Zimbabwe’s CAMPFIRE program devolves hunting fees to rural communities, financing schools, clinics and local infrastructure while encouraging tolerance for wildlife. Namibia manages disease‑free herds and limits permits, and Tanzania emphasises fair‑chase hunts in vast concessions where buffalo remain abundant. These regulatory frameworks ensure buffalo hunting remains sustainable and benefits both wildlife and people.
Buffalo are powerful and social; herds can number in the hundreds and will mob predators rather than flee. Old bulls often wallow in mud to deter insects and keep cool. Their sense of smell is keen, making down‑wind stalking essential. Hunters sometimes encounter other species—such as elephant or lion—during buffalo stalks, adding to the excitement and complexity of the hunt.
