Experience Overview

The Kamchatka brown bear (Ursus arctos beringianus) is the largest of the brown‑bear subspecies. These bears inhabit dense alder thickets, volcanic mountains and rich salmon rivers on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. Adult males can exceed 3.3 metres and weigh over 400 kilograms, making them a premier trophy for hunters seeking a big‑bear adventure. LWSG has been hunting in this region for two decades; their partners in Russia meet you in Moscow, assist with firearm clearance, organise domestic flights to Petropavlovsk and accompany you to camp. Spring and fall hunts are rugged and rewarding, combining snowmobile or river‑based travel with on‑foot stalking.

Kamchatka’s volcanic landscape, steaming cones, lush forests and deep rivers, enhances the allure of bear hunts. Spring hunts (15 April – 15 May) occur when bears emerge from dens and feed on roots and carrion. Guides travel by snowmobile to locate fresh tracks on lingering snow and then stalk on foot for a close shot. Autumn hunts (20 August – 30 September) coincide with the salmon spawn; hunters float or walk along rivers to intercept bears gorging on pink and chum salmon. Kamchatka’s brown bear population is healthy and strictly managed; outfitters receive quotas and must accompany all hunters, and revenue from licenses supports local communities and conservation. Non‑hunters can enjoy hot springs, whale‑watching or combination hunts for snow sheep or moose.

Seasonality & Timing

Spring hunts typically run from 15 April to 15 May. Bears are emerging from dens; guides use snowmobiles to track them across lingering snow before stalking on foot. Autumn hunts occur from 20 August to 30 September during the salmon spawn; hunters walk or float rivers to intercept feeding bears. Another outfitter notes that the spring season opens on 11 April and closes on 25 May, with the best dates around 20 April – 10 May. A .300‑magnum‑class rifle is recommended for the thick‑skinned quarry. Cold weather gear and layering are essential; spring hunts involve snowmobiles, while fall hunts use boats and spot‑and‑stalk techniques.
