Mongolia sits on a high plateau averaging 4 900 feet above sea level and is 42.5 % mountainous. The Gobi Desert occupies a vast area but consists of rocky mountains and valleys rather than endless sand dunes. Mongolia offers hunts for two primary species: the larger Altai ibex and the smaller Gobi ibex. The hunting season runs from July 1 to October 15 and involves horseback and foot travel from base camps that range from permanent buildings to gers and tents.

Altai Mountains Located in western Mongolia, these rugged cliffs are home to the Altai ibex. Trophies average 37–45 inches. Hunters ride horseback along valleys and then climb on foot to glass ridgelines. Camps are often permanent buildings or heated gers.
Gobi Desert & Southern Altai The rocky mountains of the southern Altai range and the Gobi Desert hold the smaller Gobi ibex, with average horns measuring 34–37 inches. Travel is by 4×4 and foot, and camps range from gers to tents.
Hangai Mountains Central Mongolia’s Hangai range offers combination hunts for Gobi ibex and other species. The terrain is less extreme than the Altai but still requires horseback travel.
Camps & Travel Depending on the area, hunters may stay in permanent lodges, traditional gers or spike camps. Spot‑and‑stalk is the preferred method; long shots are common due to open terrain.
