The Beceite ibex is the largest and darkest of Spain’s four ibex types. Found in the limestone ranges of northeastern Spain near the Mediterranean, this race is noted for its broad body and massive horns that are straighter than those of the Gredos ibex. The horns spiral less than 180 degrees, with a thick base that remains constant over much of their length before tapering toward the tip. Because of their size and wide horn spread, Beceite trophies are highly prized by collectors.
The Beceite ibex season runs from 1 November to 31 May, with the best hunting during the rut in November–December and again in April–May. Hunts take place in steep, rugged limestone mountains cloaked in Mediterranean pines and live oaks. Guides glass valleys and rock faces for feeding rams at first and last light, then stalk carefully over rocky terraces; shots may be long because cover is sparse. Despite the mild climate, the terrain is physically demanding, and successful hunters often spend hours climbing and glassing to locate a mature billy.
The Beceite ibex is part of the wider Iberian ibex population, which is assessed as stable with tens of thousands of animals across Spain. Spanish authorities regulate hunting through permits and monitor herds to maintain genetic diversity and prevent disease. The Beceite race shows considerable variation in horn shape even within a single herd, so careful management is needed to conserve these traits. Revenue from trophy hunting helps fund conservation in the Tortosa‑Beceite mountains and supports rural communities.
The Tortosa‑Beceite range is a mosaic of rocky peaks, ancient orchards and aromatic scrub. The ibex here are darker in colour than other Spanish races, and their horns have a distinctive rectangular cross‑section and gentle spiral. During the rut, dominant males herd small groups of females and engage in head‑butting contests; outside the breeding season, rams often form bachelor bands. Hunters often combine a Beceite hunt with visits to coastal towns and historic villages, sampling local cuisine and culture between stalks.
