Fallow deer (Dama dama) are graceful European deer introduced into Argentina decades ago. Bucks weigh around 110 pounds and are distinguished by their broad, palmated antlers and spotted coats. They thrive in mixed woodland and grasslands, and their rutting calls echo through the caldén forests of La Pampa. Outfitters now offer free‑range fallow hunts as part of Argentina’s big‑game packages.
Fallow deer hunts centre on the rut, which peaks from mid‑March through mid‑April. During this period bucks are highly vocal and aggressive; guides locate rutting stands by listening for deep grunts and then stalk or set up near wallows to call bucks within range. After the rut, hunters continue to pursue bucks until September, often spot‑and‑stalking through caldén scrub or sitting over feeding areas. Shots are typically taken at moderate ranges (100–150 yards), and hunts may be combined with red stag or axis deer.
As a non‑native species, fallow deer are managed to prevent overpopulation and habitat degradation. Provincial regulations require hunters to obtain licences and restrict harvests to mature bucks during the rutting and pre‑shed period. Outfitters practice habitat management—rotating pastures and controlling herd numbers—to maintain trophy quality and minimise competition with native species. Because fallow deer cannot be exported from Argentina without special permits, most trophies remain in country, encouraging sustainable local utilisation.
Fallow deer occur in several colour phases, including the common chestnut with white spots, the lighter menil and the rarer melanistic. Bucks create rutting “stands” where they scrape the ground and thrash vegetation to attract does, leading to intense fights with rivals. Fallow venison is tender and often served at hunting lodges after a successful stalk. Their autumn rut complements Argentina’s red‑stag season, allowing hunters to pursue multiple species in one trip.
