The Mid Asian ibex (Capra sibirica) is one of the largest ibex subspecies, roaming the high mountains of Kyrgyzstan and neighbouring Central Asian countries. Males develop long, sweeping horns often exceeding a metre and wear a heavy coat to survive the harsh alpine climate. These goats thrive at elevations of 9 000–14 000 ft and are considered the quintessential mountain trophy for hunters willing to tackle extreme terrain.

Hunts for Mid Asian ibex are conducted using spot‑and‑stalk techniques. Hunters ride horses or use vehicles to reach high valleys, then dismount and hike into the steep country where ibex feed. Guides glass slopes with spotting scopes and assess trophies before initiating a stalk; shots of 300–550 yards are common in the open, windswept landscape. The season in Kyrgyzstan generally runs from late August to the end of November, with the best hunting from late September through November when ibex form bachelor groups and coats thicken.

Kyrgyzstan issues a limited number of ibex licences and requires all hunters to be accompanied by registered guides. In some concessions, such as a 330 000‑acre area near Karakol, hunting was closed for two decades and is now managed by game scouts. Revenues from licences support year‑round patrols and local communities, and sound management has produced high success rates on mature ibex. Seasons and quotas are set by the government, and hunts are suspended in December through February to allow ibex to winter undisturbed.

Mid Asian ibex hunts often involve camping in yurts or simple cabins at high altitude. Hunters must be prepared for thin air, cold temperatures and long horseback rides. Because these ibex occupy cliff faces and alpine meadows, tracking is minimal; instead, guides spend hours glassing and then plan a careful approach. Snowfall in November can make travel difficult but also concentrates ibex in accessible basins.

Denise and I just returned from an incredible hunting trip near Khabarovsk, Russia, with Jay Link’s Wild Safaris. This was our first time hunting in Russia and with Jay’s outfit, and it certainly will not be our last. Every detail was handled smoothly, from our arrival in Moscow and transfer through passport control to the flight to Khabarovsk and the support of our full-time interpreter, Alex Ridel. The hunting area was outstanding, and the owner, guides, and camp staff made us feel welcome throughout the trip. We saw several younger bears before the right ones appeared, and our guides kept us patient until it was time. My Amur brown bear was aged at nine to ten years, and Denise’s was estimated at twelve to thirteen years. Both should rank high in the SCI Top 10. Jay and his team truly delivered a trip for the ages.

We could not have asked for a better experience with Jay Link’s Wild Safaris. The camp was solid and dry, the beds were comfortable, and the food was delicious. There was no need to bring sleeping bags or freeze-dried meals. Our guides, Andrey and Valeriy, did not speak English, but we communicated just fine through the universal language of hunters. They knew exactly when to say “shoot” and “no shoot,” and they waited patiently until the right Amur brown bears and Asian black bears appeared. Even when it rained for an entire day, we enjoyed relaxing in camp and listening to music from our interpreter, Alex. The entire trip was well organized, enjoyable, and filled with great people. Thank you, Jay, for always going the extra mile and providing service far beyond what is expected. We are already looking forward to our next adventure.
