The Ronda ibex is the smallest and most isolated of the Spanish ibex races. Confined to the limestone mountains of Málaga province, this light‑brown ibex has short, straight horns that grow upward in a V‑shape and then bend backwards with a modest 90‑degree spiral. Horn thickness remains constant for half the length before tapering, giving the Ronda trophies a refined appearance. Low densities and restricted range make this species a coveted trophy for hunters pursuing a Spanish ibex slam.
The season for Ronda ibex runs from 15 October to 30 April, with the rut occurring in November. Hunts take place on steep, limestone hills rising to about 4,000 feet. There are few roads, so hunters must climb on foot and glass open slopes and rock outcrops. Because cover is sparse, shots are often 300–400 yards, and the spot‑and‑stalk method is standard. Rams tend to be most active early and late in the day, bedding during the warm midday hours.
Ronda ibex populations are naturally low because their range is small and isolated, but they form part of Spain’s overall Iberian ibex population of about 50,000 animals. Strict quotas and limited permits ensure sustainable harvests and protect the genetic uniqueness of this diminutive race. Trophy fees support habitat restoration and anti‑poaching efforts in the Ronda mountains, while local guides benefit directly from legal, well‑managed hunting tourism. Maintaining connectivity with other mountain massifs is important to avoid inbreeding and to allow gene flow.
Ronda ibex inhabit open, rocky slopes interspersed with rosemary and thyme, and seldom move far from springs during the dry season. The species’ isolation has produced horns that resemble those of an Alpine ibex but on a smaller scale. During the November rut, rams compete for harems of females; outside the breeding season, they form small bachelor groups. A Ronda hunt offers not only a unique trophy but also the chance to explore Andalusia’s Moorish heritage and Mediterranean cuisine.
