Roosevelt elk (Cervus canadensis roosevelti) are the largest‑bodied elk subspecies, inhabiting the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest. They have heavier bodies and broader, palmated antlers than their Rocky Mountain cousins. Bulls often exceed 1,000 pounds, and both sexes display dark, chocolate‑brown coats with pale rumps and shaggy neck manes. The combination of weight, rainforest habitat and unique antler shape makes them a coveted trophy.

Roosevelt elk hunts are typically undertaken in dense coastal forests and clearcuts of the Olympic Peninsula and western coastal ranges. Because visibility is limited, hunters favour stand or still hunting, positioning themselves along game trails or feeding sites and listening for the distinctive mewing and grunts of elk. Spot‑and‑stalk techniques are possible in clearcuts, but shots are often close due to thick vegetation. Seasons vary by state and weapon, generally running from late August (archery) through November for firearms. The wet environment demands waterproof gear and an appreciation for Pacific rain forest conditions.

Roosevelt elk were heavily depleted by market hunting but have rebounded under modern wildlife management. They are found mainly in coastal Oregon, Washington’s Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island. Limited tags and antler‑point restrictions help maintain herd structure, and translocations have established new herds in other coastal ranges. Because Roosevelt elk have palmated antlers and heavier bodies, field judging antler points is important; conservation organisations emphasise that trophy fees contribute to habitat conservation and community outreach.

This subspecies is named after President Theodore Roosevelt, who established many U.S. national parks. Roosevelt elk thrive on lush vegetation like ferns, salmonberry and alder shoots, and seldom migrate long distances. During the rut bulls issue deep, guttural bugles rather than the high‑pitched squeals of Rocky Mountain elk. In the rainy coastal climate, elk hair becomes darker and thicker, adding to their imposing appearance.
