The mountain zebra (Equus zebra), represented by the Hartmann’s and Cape subspecies, is adapted to rugged, arid mountain ranges in Namibia and South Africa. It is smaller than its plains cousin and distinguished by a pronounced dewlap, narrow stripes that do not encircle the belly, and a chestnut muzzle. These zebras inhabit steep rocky slopes and plateaus, making them a challenging and rewarding trophy for experienced hunters.
Hunting mountain zebra requires stamina and careful planning. Spot‑and‑stalk is the primary method because vehicles cannot traverse the steep terrain; hunters glass from high points, then pick a route across rocky ridges to intercept a herd. Still‑hunting—sitting motionless and watching game trails—can also work in areas with limited cover. The dry season from May through September is considered the best time to hunt mountain zebra because vegetation recedes and animals congregate near scarce water sources. Because of the challenging terrain, a professional hunter familiar with the mountains is essential.
Mountain zebra populations have rebounded in recent decades but remain far less numerous than plains zebras. Accordingly, Namibia and South Africa issue a limited number of permits and require hunters to obtain special tags; hunts are more expensive because of the species’ rarity and remote habitat. Trophy fees support conservation initiatives such as habitat restoration, predator control and anti‑poaching patrols. Ethical hunting practices emphasise harvesting older stallions and avoiding lactating mares. By regulating offtake and investing revenue in mountain reserves, range states are helping to secure the future of this distinctive equid.
Mountain zebras form harem groups led by a stallion and several mares, while bachelor bands roam separately. They can survive on sparse mountain vegetation and will dig for water in dry riverbeds. Hartmann’s mountain zebras are found mainly in Namibia and the northern Cape, whereas Cape mountain zebras inhabit the mountainous fynbos of South Africa. Their ability to navigate precipitous cliffs has made them the emblem of resilience among Africa’s equids.
