Uganda is an emerging hunting destination situated along the Albertine Rift. Its diverse habitats ranging from savanna and woodland to papyrus swamps—support strong populations of kob, buffalo and a variety of antelope. Hunting operations are centred on a few private concessions that partner with the government and local communities to manage game sustainably.
From Lake Albert’s shores to the papyrus swamps of Mburo, Uganda offers unique plains‑game and sitatunga hunts.
Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve Located on the shores of Lake Albert, this headquarters concession offers Uganda kob, Jackson’s hartebeest, bushbuck, warthog, waterbuck and Nile buffalo. Open savanna and thickets provide varied stalking opportunities.
Lake Mburo Concession East of the capital, this concession comprises wetlands, acacia woodland and rolling hills. It’s home to East African sitatunga, Ssese Island sitatunga, East African impala, topi, East African eland (Patterson’s), bushbuck, Defassa waterbuck and zebra.
Northern Uganda Near Kidepo Valley National Park, savanna plains support excellent buffalo hunting and plains game such as Jackson’s hartebeest and oribi.
Ssese Islands & Swamps Papyrus marshes and island habitats provide challenging hunts for East African sitatunga and swamp-dwelling antelope.
Ugandan safaris are typically conducted during the dry seasons (December–February and June–August) when game concentrates near water sources and vegetation is more open. Permits and quotas are limited, and hunts are often booked well in advance. Accommodation ranges from tented camps overlooking Lake Albert to permanent lodges in Mburo.
